Breeding Records

Breeding records form an important part of any Herd Management, or Livestock Management Software. Herd-Logic™ 3000 has many unique features not commonly found in other software packages.

  • Customizable default gestation for each animal species.
  • Direct link between pregnancy tests and related breeding (mating) records.
  • Handles Artificial Insemination (AI) and Embryo Transplant (ET). Any ET offspring born, will remain at the side of the Surrogate Dam until weaned. The pedigree will show the Genetic Dam.
  • Any breeding (mating) entered for a female is automatically available for viewing under the service records of the male.
  • Record reaction of dam, reaction of sire, and general comments.
  • The animal selection tree will show the status of a female, as "Open", "Serviced but not confirmed pregnant", "Confirmed pregnant", and "Open, premature termination of pregnancy".
  • The animal selection tree will show all offspring with their mother, until weaned.
  • Upon confirmation that a female is pregnant, Herd-Logic™ 3000 will show all previous pregnancies, and calculate an expected due date. You have the option to override this date.
  • When viewing records for a single, pregnant, female, a progress bar will show the progress in pregnancy as the number of days, and as a percentage.
  • Recording a single, or multiple births, automatically creates the pedigree for each offspring.
  • Progeny records for dam and sire are automatically updated.
  • Maintain a list of breeding males (herd sires, studs, bulls, bucks, rams, etc.). Breeding males are automatically flagged as proven, when you record a birth for a female they have serviced, or if the pedigree shows that they have produced offspring.

Entering Breeding Data

In Herd-Logic™ 3000, breeding (service) records are always entered for the female being bred or serviced. Once a record has been entered, the information can be viewed under the name of the service sire, or the semen donor when using AI. The following information can be tracked for any service record: Entering a service (breeding) record for a female animal

  • Date, time, and duration of service for hand-timed, artificial insemination, and embryo transplant type of service. For embryo transplant the name of the "Donor" female must also be supplied.
  • Date of service and date removed from pasture, for pasture breeding.
  • Name of service sire.
  • Reaction of the female and reaction of the male.
  • Sire owner at the time of service.
  • Dam owner at the time of conception.
  • Comments related to each entry.
  • If DNA analysis show that the wrong sire was entered on a breeding (mating) record, changing the Sire on the breeding record, will automatically update the pedigrees for all siblings born as a result of that mating.

For each female you will see the names of all sires that serviced her and the dates she was serviced.
For each breeding male, you will see the names of all the females he has serviced and the dates of service.

Herd-Logic™ 3000 also provides you with a Gantt Chart overview of all current and past pregnancies, for all or selected females in your herd.

Entering Pregnancy Tests

Pregnancy tests in Herd-Logic™ 3000 are directly linked to the corresponding breeding record. However, you are NOT required to enter a pregnancy test. A female can be flagged as pregnant directly from the breeding record.

There are three types of pregnancy test you can record. These are:

  • A progesterone test,
  • a palpation test,
  • an ultra sound test,
  • A "Tease" test.
A "Tease" test is mainly used for Alpacas and Llamas, but can be used as "Observation" test for other animals. This test can also be used for "rectal palpation" for all animal species.
A positive test for any of the three categories, will automatically flag the female as pregnant, and Herd-Logic™ 3000 will calculate the expected due date. A negative test will flag the female as "open", and another service is required. A new test result has been added in Herd-Logic™ 3000 where the test results are uncertain. This test result is labeled, "Not Sure, wait till next test". When this result is selected, the status (pregnant, not pregnant will not change).

Entering a single or multiple birth

Herd-Logic™ 3000 makes it easy to record a single or multiple birth. When you indicate the number of siblings their are in a litter and the program automatically generates a TAB for each sibling. You select each tab and record the sex, and name (or any other unique identification). In addition you have the option to enter the time of birth, the owner at birth and the birth weight.

There is no need to record the name of the dam (ewe, nanny, cow, mare, etc.) or the name of the sire (ram, buck, bull, stud, etc.), because this information is automatically taken from the breeding record. Because the parents are known, Herd-Logic™ 3000 will automatically create a pedigree for each sibling. Each sibling will be placed at the side of its mother, until weaned.
The sex and name (or tag number) are required. However, just enter a name (or tag number) that is unique and allows you to identify each sibling. Once you register the animal you can change the name (or tag number), and Herd-Logic™ 3000, will automatically display the new name (or tag number) for all records.
