Herd Management I - Managing your Herd

Dealing with routine and repetitive tasks

HerdLogic™ allows you to view and print tasks that you have scheduled to perform. Whenever you specify a "next date" for any of the following entries, the task will be automatically added to the "Tasks To Do" list in the HIM:

  • Routine "Medical/Health" procedure administered to a single animal or a group of animals.
  • Weight, height, or body score entry for a single animal or a group of animals.
  • Entering a "positive" pregnancy test for a bred female, or flagging a female animal as pregnant. Once the status of a female animal is set to pregnant, she will automatically be placed on the "Due dates listing".

A task will remain on the "To Do" list, until the same "Medical - Health" procedure is performed on any date past the last date this procedure was performed. This means that if you decide to perform a planned procedure ahead of schedule, the task will automatically be removed from the "To Do" list. If you specified a next date when you performed the procedure ahead of schedule, the new task will be added to the "To Do" list for the proper calendar date.
Any overdue task will remain on the list for 6 months, after which time it is automatically removed from the list. When an animal dies, all outstanding tasks are automatically removed. If the animal was part of a group, it will also be removed from the group.

When you sell an animal, you have the option to remove outstanding tasks. This feature is very useful when you sell an animal, but the new owner will not transfer the animal to his or her own place for a while. This allows you to carry on with the routine care and maintenance of the animal.

Different views from the HIM

The daily view

The daily view of the Herd Information Manager (HIM) gives you a quick overview of the daily tasks at hand. If you assigned a task to a single animal, the name of the animal and the task will be listed. If you assigned the same task to a group of animals, the daily view will list a group code, the number of animals in the group, and the task to be performed. For example, the last time you de-wormed a group of 10 animals with "Ivermectin", you entered as a next date "2001-08-30".
When you select the daily view for Thursday, August 30, 2001, you will see an entry for de-worming a group of 10 animals with "Ivermectin". Clicking the group entry will list the names and sex of all animals in the group. Listing animals in a group is only available from the daily and weekly views in the Herd Information Manager.

Expected due dates for pregnant females are listed in all views. The entry in each view lists the name of the female, the date of the last service and the name of the service sire.

Note: HerdLogic™ will use the short date format specified on your PC. "2001/08/30", "8/30/2001", "2001.08.30", "30-08-2001", "01/30/8", etc. are some examples. The selected Windows® setting will be used in all reports.
