What is HerdLogic™?

HerdLogic™ is the new release, and major upgrade of LamaLogic™. The name change reflect new and enhanced capabilities for other species in addition to Llamas and Alpacas. Many new group functions and customizable reporting have been added.

HerdLogic™ replaces LamaLogic™.
LamaLogic™ has reached the end of its life cycle and is no longer available. HerdLogic™ will automatically convert data from LamaLogic ™.

HerdLogic™ contains all the features of LamaLogic ™ and many new features.

HerdLogic™ is one of the most comprehensive Herd Management and Livestock Management Software applications on the market. It is designed to meet the needs and requirements of today's livestock industry. HerdLogic™ does not place any restrictions on the number of animals you can track.
HerdLogic™ has its own build-in backup and restore utility. If you are using Windows XP, you can backup directly to a CD-R or CD-RW, from the program.

HerdLogic™ comes with a fully integrated Help File, accessible directly from the program. Click this link to view a sample in a Flash movie that show the details in the Help File and Manual.

HerdLogic™ meets the needs of farmers, ranchers, breeders and veterinarians. HerdLogic™ is not just for Llamas and Alpacas, custom modules are available for Goats, Sheep, Bovine (cattle), and Equine (horses, donkeys). These modules display the correct nomenclature and features for the selected species.

HerdLogic™ interface is unique for Herd Management Software. The Animal Explorer Tree allows you to all view animals in any named location, e.g. barn, pasture, paddock at your farm, ranch, or stud. Each animal is identified with the universal symbol indicating its sex. Any offspring not yet weaned is listed with the mother. The breeding status of females (open, serviced, pregnant) is also displayed in the Explorer Tree.

Each animal in your herd retains a lifetime record...even after the animal is sold, deceased, or culled from your herd...providing you with the required information to track the performance of your herd over time.

HerdLogic™ allows you to assign multiple owners, to each animal and indicate the name of partnerships and percentage share for each animal.

HerdLogic™ allows you register your animals in multiple registries, and record an alias name if the name in different registries is different.

Please take a closer look at the many powerful and unique features in HerdLogic™ by browsing the various sections of our web site.

HerdLogic™ is not just for Llamas and Alpacas

Although the initial version of LamaLogic, which was launched in 1995, focused only on Alpacas and Llamas, HerdLogic™ now enhanced features aimed at the modules for Goats, Sheep, Bovine (Cattle), and Equine (Horses).

Why the special options for different species of animals?

HerdLogic™ uses the options to provide you with an improved user interface. Each option uses terminology, specific to the species it is intended for. For example, the offspring for alpacas and llamas are referred to as "cria". The offspring for goats, sheep, bovines and equines, are referred to as "kid", "lamb", "calf", and "foal" respectively. Terms like "dam", "sire", "ewe", "ram", "cow", "heifer", "bull", "mare", 'stud" etc. are used in each option. This allows you as a user to work with your own familiar terminology. Each option also allows you to set certain default parameters for each species, such as the average gestation duration, sexual maturity for male and female animals, weaning age and weaning weight checks, etc.

The Goat and Sheep Option

The Goat and Sheep option in HerdLogic™, closely mirrors that for Alpacas and Llamas. These modules use many of the same extensive fiber system features as are used for Alpacas. This means that you can display several key fiber characteristics directly on the Pedigree Tree for each animal. This unique feature provides valuable feedback to help you improve wool and fiber quality.
The following fiber quality information can be displayed on the pedigree for each animal:

  • Fiber Diameter in microns,
  • Standard Deviation,
  • Coefficient of Variance,
  • Percentage of fibers above 30 microns.

The Pedigree Tree in HerdLogic™ is unique, in that it is dynamic. The Pedigree Tree also shows you all offspring produced by the selected animal. This allows you to see the fiber or wool characteristics for the ancestors and the offspring at a glance. You can click on any animal in the Pedigree Tree, either an ancestor, or offspring and HerdLogic™ will display the pedigree for that animal, and its offspring. This feature allows you to explore the lineage in a convenient and unique way. HerdLogic™ tracks the last 10 selected animals, to make it easy to return to a previously viewed pedigree.

In the group section, depending on the option, you can compare pedigrees for ewes and rams, or nanny and billy goats. Any common ancestor in the first 5 generations will be flagged. Here again, you can select any ancestor to compare their pedigree. For more details see Pedigree Comparison. Using the Auto Compare option, you can compare 10 pedigrees of rams and 10 pedigrees of ewes at the same time.

The Bovine Option

The Bovine option in HerdLogic™ exhibits the same features as the Alpaca and Llama module, except that any reference to fiber or wool is not accessible.

The Pedigree Tree in HerdLogic™ is unique, in that it is dynamic. The Pedigree Tree also shows you all offspring produced by the selected animal. This allows you to see the breeds for the ancestors and the offspring at a glance. You can click on any animal in the Pedigree Tree, either an ancestor, or offspring and HerdLogic™ will display the pedigree for that animal, and its offspring. This feature allows you explore the lineage in a convenient and unique way. HerdLogic™ tracks the last 10 selected animals, to make it easy to return to a previously viewed pedigree.

In the group section, depending on the option, you can compare the pedigrees for cows and heifers with those for bulls. Any common ancestor in the first 5 generations will be flagged. Here again, you can select any ancestor to compare their pedigrees. For more details see Pedigree Comparison.

Using the Auto Compare option, you can compare 10 pedigrees of bulls and 10 pedigrees of cows/heifers at the same time.

The Easy to Use Interface

HerdLogic™ is designed to be easy for the user. HerdLogic™ uses the concept of locations, which gives a quick overview to the animals and their location on you farm, ranch, or stud.
The application applies many checks and "business rules" in the background to maintain consistency in your data. For example, when you enter the pedigree for an animal, HerdLogic™ will compare the date of birth of the animal, with the date of birth of the parents, and provide a warning if any data is conflict with age or sexual maturity of the parents, as specified in the user defaults.
